South Korean electronics giant Samsung has finally kept to its promise of adding bitcoin (BTC) support to its latest range of smartphones. The information that Samsung Galaxy S10 phones now support bitcoin (BTC) was rolled to the public through an update on the Samsung website.
According to the update we gathered from their site, Bitcoin support has been added to the ‘Blockchain Keystore,’ a platform for decentralized apps (dApps) made for the Galaxy S10 series. Six devices support the Blockchain Keystore: Galaxy S10, S10e, S10 +, S10 G5, Note10 and Note10 +.
In addition to bitcoin, support for Klaytn (KLAY) has also been added. In case you don’t know, Klaytn is a so-called ‘hybrid’ blockchain; a combination of a public and a private blockchain and was recently released by the South Korean internet and messaging giant Kakao.
Previously, the Blockchain Keystore only supported ERC20 tokens on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. The only drawback is the fact that the Blockchain Keystore is currently only accessible from a few countries namely: Canada, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, South Korea, United States of America and the United Kingdom.
The Galaxy S10 phones were unveiled in March with support for a cryptocurrency wallet. It was Earlier reported that it showed support for bitcoin, but there was no sign of it during the unveiling. Recall that the Blockchain Keystore was launched in July.
In late April, Samsung announced that it had invested $ 2.9 million in cryptocurrency wallet developer Ledger known for the Nano S.
Rumors also appeared at the end of April that Samsung would be busy developing its own Ethereum based blockchain. An anonymous source also said at the time that Samsung might be planning to release its cryptocurrency anytime in the future.
It was recently revealed that Kakao is planning to launch its own “immensely easy to use” cryptocurrency wallet with support for Klaytn.
We are still following these new updates keenly, and we expect it to push Bitcoin to adoption further.
I am happy that Samsung Galaxy S10 phones now support bitcoin (BTC) and I hope other companies follow suit.
